What To Watch For This Week In Florida Sports (August 5-11)

logo-icc-revised

WATCH FOR professional soccer to be in the headlines for the next few days in Florida.  The International Champions Cup is being played tonight and tomorrow night at Sun Life Stadium in Miami with eight of the most recognized teams in the world playing in the final matches of the Cup. The championship features Real Madrid against Chelsea and there’s three more games on the schedule.

On Aug. 6 and 9, the Orlando City Soccer club will make its case before Orange County authorities, hoping to secure $20 million in surplus tourist tax money to support the first phase of a stadium project in downtown Orlando. Organizers say that Orlando’s popularity and the potential facility’s ability to attract a variety of events — soccer and otherwise — will appeal to commissioners and politicians who prefer to invest that tax revenue in projects that will keep the tourists flowing in.

WATCH FOR Sarasota to move forward as an international hub for the sport of Rowing. Southwest Florida received, on Monday, a tentative — but promising — nod from rowing’s governing body to host the 2017 World Rowing Championships, the sport’s largest competition apart from the Olympic Games. The event will be held at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota.
